[174] It seems probable that Charles's parents were Joseph Harris and Dinah nee Alway. He was recorded on the 1851 Census aged 6, son of Dinah Harris. His brothers George, aged 12 and John aged 10 were baptised as children of Joseph and Dinah, and they also had a son named Charles baptised in 1852 - possibly a late baptism, although it does not say so in the Thornbury baptism register. Joseph apparently was absent in 1841 and 1851, and it looks like he was transported, as there is a record (Q/Gc5/5) of the proceedings of the Lent Assizes, 1841, of a conviction of a Joseph Harris of Thornbury on 9 Mar 1841, "charged on the Oath of (???) with feloniously stealing at Thornbury on the 8th day of March instant one piece of faggot wood, the property of Ann Collins", for which he was sentenced to Transportation for ten years. He was discharged from Gloucester Gaol on 2 Apr 1841 and either arrived, or left Leviathan Hulks Portsmouth 4 May 1841. The same record refers to entry #74 of the Lent Assizes 1837 for his appearance, but I was unable to find it on Ancestry. [return to Charles HARRIS ]
