Author's Note:
The following account of Lt Col Ernest Hanley Manningham BULLER's
death was published in the Cheadle Herald Saturday 10 November 1888. "Death of Lt Col Buller commanding the 2nd Rifle Brigade took place at
Woolwich Dockyard early on Thursday morning in consequence of alighting
from a train on the wrong side. The Col received dreadful injuries and was
immediately conveyed on an ambulance to the Auxillary Hospital where he
died shortly after addmission. He was returning to barrackes from the
United Services Club and having fallen asleep in the train was suddenly
wakened up at Woolwich and stepping on the line instead of the platform
was caught by a passing engine. Lt Col BULLER served in the Zulu War with much distinction."
