St Francis's Church, Funtley
St Francis's Church, Funtley stands almost under the M27. It is diminutive, a sort of T-shaped chapel which is possibly not still in use, due to the tiny domestic looking extension (with kitchen) to the north. It was built in 1836 with a small bell turret which still houses a bell. Several smaller windows are blank or blocked? Note: the chapel at KNOWLE Hospital still survives in amongst the old lunatic asylum buildings, all of which are surrounded by tall fences as they are converted into housing. The roofline and bellcote of the chapel can be seen from a ward office window, rising above the myriad of additional houses appearing in the former hospital grounds. Note: Funtley is a hamlet in Fareham parish. (ex. 1868 Gazetteer) (Commentary provided by Phil Draper/Rosemary Lockie) |
