Thomas apparently left Old Down some time after 1891. I have identified him in 1901 living in Peterstone, Monmouthshire, working as an Argricultural Labourer at the farm of Charles Timothy, who was Farm Bailiff. By 1911, Charles had died, and Thomas had moved on. and is recorded at White Hart, Machen, Monmouthshire in the household of Leanard (sic) Morgan, working as a Mason's Labourer. The only occasion for doubt is that whilst in 1901 he was recorded as born "Alvestone" Gloucestershire, in 1911 he was recorded as born "Gloucester City", but having looked in earlier Census, there does not appear to have been a Thomas who would fit that description, so I have concluded his place of birth was recorded somewhat "loosely".

The marriage entry records that John was aged 26 and Elizabeth aged 27. The Witnesses were Mark SATTERTHWAITE and Richard HARRISON. My first assumption was that Mark was Elizabeth's father, in which case she would have been only 18. However, placing her as the daughter of John SATTERTHWAITW and Anne CRAGGS, indicates her age was as stated, and would indicate Mark was her half brother.
